WHAT IS DRY EYE?

When the eyes are insufficiently moisturized, a common condition known as dry eye occurs. This can lead to itching, redness and discomfort due to the dry areas on the surface of the eye. The most common cause of dry eye is that the tear ducts don’t produce enough tears to properly lubricate the eyes, or because of an imbalance in the tears causing them to evaporate too quickly.

Tears are made up of water, mucus, and oil and these components must be balanced to provide the correct amount of water to the eye. Dry eye symptoms include:

  • Redness
  • Irritation
  • Burning
  • Tired eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Itching

There are a variety of treatments to help mitigate the symptoms of dry eye. Some of these include:

  • Omega 3 supplements or dietary intake
  • Artificial tears
  • Having punctal plugs inserted into the drainage ducts of the eye
