Access Eye Institute offers a variety of options to help treat Glaucoma. Treatments typically include drops, laser treatments, or surgery. These treatments work by lowering the intraocular pressure that is associated with the glaucoma in order to prevent damage to the optic nerve which leads to vision loss.

Glaucoma treatments work by either decreasing the production of intraocular fluid or by increasing drainage of the fluid. Some treatment options include:

  • Medicated eye drops- Typically medicated eye drops are the first treatment recommended. In many cases multiple medications can be utilized in order to create the desired result.
  • Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)- This laser targets the melanin in specific cells in the eye, leaving the other cells undamaged. Laser treatment is typically another first option for those diagnosed with glaucoma.

  • iStent- iStent is a tiny implant inserted into the drainage area of the eye during surgery. iStent can lower IOP and reduce reliance on medication. iStent works by improving the outflow of liquid from the eye, which in turn lowers the pressure reducing the need to rely on eye drops.
